Cate of the Lost Colony by Lisa Klein was a great read. Ms. Klein seamlessly weaves together fact and fiction to create a tale of adventure and forbidden love. Lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth I, Catherine Archer makes the mistake of having a dalliance with Sir Walter Raleigh, one of Elizabeth's favorites, and is banished to the struggling colony of Roanoke. She and the other colonists must rely on a Croatoan Indian for their survival. When the English finally return, the colonists have disappeared with out a trace.
If you are interested in the Lost Colony, you might also like the following books from the TA library:
Fiction
- Roanoke: A Novel of the Lost Colony by Sonia Levitin
Nonfiction
- Croatoan: Birthplace of American by Scott Dawson
- The Lost Rocks by David La Vere (There was a story that surfaced in the 1940s, that some of the colonists survived and left messages written on stones to lead searchers to them in Georgia where they had taken refuge among the Native American people. This book examines that story.)
- The Lost Colony of Roanoke: Opposing Viewpoints by Tom Schouweiler
I would also recommend that, if you ever are in the area of Roanoke Island, you take the opportunity to see the outdoor play The Lost Colony (http://thelostcolony.org). It is well worth the time and expense. Just be sure to take a jacket. It is cool next to the water at night. I would also suggest you take plenty of mosquito repellant.
