However, Sarah's martyrdom is important to a lot of people, people who don't take kindly to what Lee's trying to do. And the more she learns, the less certain she is about what's right. she doesn't know what will be worse: the guilt of staying silent or the consequences of speaking up.
This story is very reminiscent of the of the Columbine High School shooting and the myths that grew around it. The mistake that made Cassie Bernall a martyr is very similar to what happens in the book. In such extreme circumstance the human brain can get things very wrong.
